Battle at Yorktown

Location : York County and Newport News.

Campaign : Peninsula Campaign.

Date : April 5-May 4, 1862.

Principal Commanders : Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan [US]; Maj. Gen. John B. Magruder and Gen. Joseph E. Johnston [CS].

Estimated Casualties : 320 total.

Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan’s army encountered Maj. Gen. John B. Magruder’s Confederate troops at Yorktown behind the Warwick River. However, the Federals were strongly held. McClellan ordered the construction of siege fortifications, and brought heavy siege guns to the front. Gen. Joseph E. Johnston supplied reinforcements for Magruder. On April 16, Union forces probed the Confederate line, resulting in about 309 casualties. McClellan planned for a massive bombardment on May 4, but the Confederate retreated.
