Gen. Robert E. Grant’s and Maj. Gen. George G. Meade’s advance on Richmond, stalled at Spotsylvania Court House on May 8. May 12-13: Union attack against the Bloody Angle, captured nearly a division of Lee’s army. Fighting continued for nearly 20 hours. May 19: Confederate attempt to turn the Union right flank at Harris Farm failed. May 21: Grant disengaged.
