Date : April 6-7, 1862.

Principal Commanders : Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and Maj. Gen. Don Carlos Buell [US]; Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston and Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard [CS].

Estimated Casualties : 23,746 total (US 13,047; CS 10,699).

On April 6,1962, the Confederate troops launched an attack against the Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant at Shiloh, Tennessee. By the end of the afternoon, Union troops were almost defeated.

However, during the night, Union had reinforcements arrived. At first, Confederate Troops were unaware of the increased Union troops. However, Confederate troops soon were on the backfoot, and started to retreat. Exhausted Union troops did not follow.
