Western Front of World War One

1914, August 3: German troops cross Belgian border. August 20: German troops had occupied Brussels.

French Fifth Army and British Expeditionary Force challenged the German advance. But, by end of August, the Allies were in retreat.

French Army and British Expeditionary Force crossed River Marne on September 2. Counter-attack resulted in "Battle of the Marne".

The Germans, who could not break through to Paris was given orders to retreat to the River Aisne. The German commander decided to hold those parts of France and Belgium, that Germany occupied. The German troops dug themselves into trenches.

The Allies, unable to break through, also dug into trenches. These trenches stretched from the North Sea to the Swiss Frontier. This became known as the "Western Front".
