Verdun World War One

February, 1916: German Troops attacked. Germany used a million troops, led by Crown Prince Wilhelm. The French had only 200,000 troops.

The French troops initially retreated to their second line of trenches. February 24: French had retreated to the third line. General Henri-Philippe Petain appointed commander of Verdun sector.

By the end of Febuary, the German advance was halted. March 6: German Fifth Army advanced 3km. Fort Vaux fell on 7th June.

French counter-attacked and forts at Douaumont and Vaux recaptured. The Battle at Verdun was the longest battle of World War One. It came to an end on the December 18.
