Battle of Mons World War One

70,000 British Expeditionary Force arrives France, August 14, 1914. They encounter advancing German Army at "Mons".

British infantry corps, under General Horace Smith-Dorrien, were deployed east and west of Mons across a 40km front. Cavalry division kept in reserve. Royal Fusiliers were sent to destroy the bridges over the Mons-Conde Canal to stop the German advance.

August 23: 150,000 German soldiers attack the British positions. British forced to retreat to the River Marne.
