Neville Chamberlain 1869-1940

Neville Chamberlain was born in 1869. Educated at Rugby School. Spent several years managing his fathers plantations in the Bahamas.

Later he went into the copper-brass business. Chamberlain became involved in politics. In 1915 was elected Lord Mayor of Birmingham.

In 1918 was elected as the Conservative MP for Ladywood. He served as Postmaster-General (1923-24), Minister of Health (1924-29), and Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Chamberlain replaced Stanley Baldwin as prime minister. Chamberlain conducted a foreign policy that later became known as appeasement. Some members of the House of Commons called on Chamberlain to take action against Adolf Hitler.

On 29th September, 1938, Chamberlain, Adolf Hitler, Edouard Daladier and Benito Mussolini signed the Munich Agreement. Later, Hitler had broken the Munich Agreement. After Hitler invaded Poland, Chamberlain declared war on Germany.

After members of the Labour and Liberal Party refused to serve in his proposed National Government Chamberlain resigned. Ill health forced Chamberlain to leave office in 1940. He died on 9th November, 1940.
