Maj. Gen. Robert Patterson’s division crossed the Potomac River near Williamsport and marched on the main road to Martinsburg. Union troops encountered troops of T.J. Jackson’s brigade. Jackson had issues orders to delay the Union advance only. On July 3, Patterson occupied Martinsburg. On July 15, Patterson marched to Bunker Hill.
Patterson turned east to Charles Town, then withdrew to Harpers Ferry.
