During World War Two, Hamburg became a major target of the British Royal Air Force. From, 1940 to 1945, the RAF carried out 187 air raids on Hamburg.

The heaviest raids were carried out in July and August 1943. During these raids, firestorms caused the deaths of 50,000 people. Over a million people fled Hamburg.
