General Mark Clark 1896-1984

Born Madison Barrack, New York, 1896. Graduated from United States Military Academy at West Point in 1917. Clark served in France during World War I.

He graduated from "Command and General Staff School" at Fort Leavenworth, in 1935. Clark was named assistant chief of staff for operations of the general headquarters in August 1941.

Clark was appointed deputy chief of staff of Army Ground Forces. Later, he was made chief of staff. 1942: Clark became deputy commander in chief of the Allied Forces in the North African Theater.

1943: Clark became Commanding General of the 5th Army in Italy. 1944: Took command of the 15th Army Group, consisting of all Allied Forces in Italy.

1945: Clark was chief of U.S. Occupation Forces in Austria and U.S. High Commissioner for Austria. He negotiated a treaty for Austria with the Council of Foreign Ministers. He accepted the surrender of German forces in Italy and Austria in May, 1945.

1953: Clark signed a military armistice between the United Nations Command, North Korean Army, and the Chinese People's Volunteers in Korea.

1953: Accepted the Presidency of The Citadel. Died in 1984. Buried at The Citadel campus.
