1936: Anglo-Egyptian Treaty provides for partial withdrawal of British forces. Some forces remain needed to protect the Suez Canal. British Army had 36,000 men guarding canal and oil fields.

13th September, 1940: Poorly trained Italian Army began advancing into Egypt. Easily halted by the British defences at Mersa Matruh. British counter-offensive on 9th December: Italians suffered heavy casualties and pushed back. 1941: Captured port of Tobruk in Libya from the Italians.

January 1941: Germany sends General Erwin Rommel. Rommel pushes British Army out of most of Libya. British managed to hold supply base at Tobruk.

Rommel, launched a counterattack with the British Army on the retreat. Rommel the port on 21st June, 1942. Winston Churchill made a trip to Egypt to assess the sitiuation.

30th August, 1942: Rommel attacks Alam el Halfa. Montgomery withdraws to El Alamein. Establishes defensive line from the coast to the impassable Qattara Depression.

23rd October: Montgomery launcheS Operation Lightfoot. The 9th Australian Division created a salient in the enemy positions under extreme pressure.

1st November 1942: Montgomery launches attack on the Deutsches Afrika Korps at Kidney Ridge. Rommel eventually withdraws Hitler overrules Rommel, orders Germans to stand and fight. The Eighth Army broke through the German lines. Eventually Rommel was given permission to retreat.

British Army recaptures Tobruk 13th November, 1942. Churchill was convinced the battle of El Alamein marked the turning point in the war.
