Field Marshal Harold Alexander 1891-1969

Harold Rupert Leofric George Alexander, was born London, 1891. He trained at Sandhurst, and during the First World War commanded a battalion of Irish Guards on the Western Front. Commanded in Burma later.

August, 1942: Churchill sent Alexander and Montgomery to the Western Desert to inaugurate a new regime. Montgomery later wrote, "Alexander" 'the only man under whom...any general...would gladly serve in a subordinate postion'.

Became deputy to Eisenhower's appointment as SCAEF, succeeded his as Supreme Allied Commander in the Mediterranean. Alexander took the German unconditional surrender in Italy, 29 April, 1945. He was Governor General of Canada (1946-52). Gained the rank of Earl in 1952. Become the Minister of Defence under Winston Churchill until 1954. Died of a heart attack in 1969.
