Dutch Famine

During World War Two, the Dutch people of the Netherlands became the victim of a German Administration embargo during the winter of 1944 - 1945, that evenually cost approximately the deaths of 10,000 Dutch people.

The Allies had liberated the southern part of the Netherlands, but the Western part remained under German control. The Germans put an embargo on food transports to the western Netherlands in relaliation for a railway strike that started on September, 1944.

The embargo soon became deadly after an early winter set in. This stopped barges from delivering supplies acoss frozen canals.

The winter was so severe that people destroyed houses to provide fuel for heating.

In May 1945, the Dutch Famine finally ended with the liberation of the western Netherlands by the Allies.
