Estimated Casualties : 8,575 total (US 5,665; CS 2,910).

October 19: Confederate Army under Lt. Gen. Jubal A. Early, surprises the Union at Cedar Creek. The VIII and XIX Army Corps were routed. Commander Maj. Gen. Philip Sheridan arrived to lead the troops. A crushing counterattack was launched, which recovered the battlefield.
