BLOCKADE OF THE SOUTH

The Confederate South had little industry of its own. It needed to import materials to help fight the war.

General Winfield Scott, suggested that the Union blockade the South to prevent them importing materials it needed to fight the war. The "Anaconda Plan" was formed. The Plan was approved by President Lincoln. The plan called for the Navy to form a blockade of ships to close all the major port cities of the South.

An effort was made to improve the federal navy. By July, an effective blockade had begun. However, he South responded by building small, fast ships that could outmaneuver Union vessels.
