ASSASSINATION OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN

John Wilkes Booth was at one time a popular actor. However, he ended his acting carreer to pursue support for the Confederate States of America. Booth was actively involved with Confederate partisans.

A Plan was made to kidnap President Lincoln. However, this failed.

John Booth decided to assassinate President Lincoln. Booth hoped to throw the country into political chaos.

On Friday, April 14, Booth dropped by Fords Theatre and learned President Lincoln was planning to attend the evening performance of "Our American Cousin". The Presidential party arrived at Ford's around 8:30 P.M. John Booth arrived at Ford's around 9:30 P.M. Booth was armed with a single shot derringer and hunting knife. At around 10:15 P.M., John Booth opened the door to the State Box and shot Lincoln in the back of the head.

After shooting Lincoln, Booth fled Washington on horseback and rode to southern Maryland. Booth had broken a small bone in his left leg during the escape, forcing him to stop at Dr. Mudd's home.

On April 26th, Booth and Herold were surrounded while hiding in a tobacco shed in Port Royal, Virginia. Herold surrendered to the Union troops. Booth held out and was shot while the shed burned down around him.
