A Varicose Vein is a large blood vessel.
Your veins have valves that keep your blood from flowing backward.
If these valves become too weak then blood pools in the vein which causes it to buldge.
The most common sites for varicose veins are the legs.
Varicose veins may also occur in other parts of the body as:
Hemorrhoids.
Esophageal varices.
Varicoceles.
About 15% of all adults are affected and it is more likely to occur in women than men.
The problem also increases with age and may approach 50% of people older than 50 years.
What can you do to help :
Elastic stockings help support the dilated veins.
Avoid excessive standing.
Treatment :
SCLEROTHERAPY : an irritant chemical is injected into the veins causing them to scar and seal off.
This detours the blood to nearby healthier veins.
STRIPPING : a procedure used to remove larger varicose veins.
Parts of the vein can be removed or tied off or the entire vein can be removed.
HERBS THAT MAY BE OF HELP :
HORSE CHESTNUT : Can be used both internally and externally.
WITCH HAZEL : Is used as an ointment, especially for hemorrhoids.
BILBERRIES : Strengthen capillaries in the body.
There is also a strong family predisposition.
