VAGINITIS

There are three main causes of vaginitis : Hormonal, Infectious and Irritant.

Vaginitis is an inflammation of the vagina characterized by discharge, irritation, itching.

The cause of vaginitis cannot be determined solely on the basis of symptoms or a physical examination.

Laboratory tests of vaginal fluid are required for a correct diagnosis.

A variety of drugs are available for treating vaginal infections and accompanying vaginitis.

HORMONAL : Includes atrophic vaginitis usually found in postmenopausal women.

INFECTIOUS : Usually caused by bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis or candidiasis.

IRRITANT : May result from allergies or substances that are irritating.

NUTITIONAL SUBSTANCES : Certain nutritional substances may be of help.

VITAMIN E : This is an immune boosting nutrient that can be taken orally in capsule or tablet.

VITAMIN A : Should be taken daily.

BORIC ACID : Capsules inserted into the vagina may be of help in treating yeast infection.

LACTOBACILLUS ACIDOPHILUS : This is a strain of friendly bacteria. It is an integral part of normal vaginal flora.

TEA TREE OIL : May be of use in treating Trichomonas.

GARLIC : The growth of Candida Albicans is inhibited by garlic.

DIET : It is important you maintain a well balanced diet. A diet that is low in sugar, fat and refined foods helps in preventing vaginal infections caused by candida.
