King's roots were in the African-American Baptist church.
Attended Morehouse College in Atlanta.
Later, he studied at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania and the Boston University.
Received his Ph.D. in systematic theology in 1955.
In 1953, he married Coretta Scott.
In 1954, he accepted the pastorate at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama.
In 1955, King president of the Montgomery Improvement Association, after activist Rosa Parks refused to comply with Montgomery's segregation policy on buses..
What followed set King on the path of National prominance.
Black residents launched a bus boycott which gained National Media attention.
In 1956 the United States Supreme Court declared that Alabama's segregation laws were unconstitutional and Montgomery buses were desegregated.
In 1959, King toured India where he studied Gandhian nonviolent strategies.
In 1963, King and the SCLC lead demonstrations in Birmingham, Alabama which attracted heavy media attention.
As a result, President Kennedy submitted broad civil rights legislation to Congress, which led to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
King became Time magazine's "Man of the Year", in 1963.
He recieved the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
King also spoke out openly against U.S. intervention in the Vietnam War.
In 1967, King initiated the "Poor People's" Campaign.
On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr was assassinated.
