The United States ZIP Code was introduced in 1963.

The advantage of the ZIP Code is that it allows for electronic processing and delivery of mail.

In 1983, an expanded ZIP Code called ZIP+4 was introduced.

If you mail an envelope without a ZIP Code in the address must be manually sorted.
