Wisconsin History

In 1634, French explorer Jean Nicolet visited the area. The region was first settled by the French. In 1763, it was ceded to Great Britain.

After the American Revolutionary War, Wisconsin was part of the U.S. Northwest Territory. Wisconsin Territory was organized on July 3, 1836. In 1848, Wisconsin was admitted as the 30th state.

The state gained its nickname, the "Badger State", due to the early mining boom in the state when miners both worked and lived in their mines.

The capital is Madison and Milwaukee is the largest city. A large part of the population is of German ancestry.
