San Diego History

The area of present day San Diego had long been inhabited by the Kumeyaay people. In 1542, the area was explored by the Spanish. The first permanent settlements were established in the 1700s.

The region was originally named San Miguel, but in 1602, the area was renamed to San Diego. In 1846, the U.S. acquired San Diego from Mexico. In 1850, San Diego was incorporated as a city.

San Diego is home to a major U.S. naval base.

San Diego is the seventh largest in the United States.
