Mount Rushmore

The idea for Mount Rushmore came from Doane Robinson, the superintendent of the State Historical Society in 1923.

The mountain itself was named after Charles E. Rushmore, a New York lawyer.

Mount Rushmore is 5,700 ft above sea level.

Sculptor Gutzon Borglum carved into the side of the mountain, the heads of four great presidents, Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt.

Borglum worked on the project from 1927 until his death in 1941. His son, Lincoln, finished the sculpture later that year.

Total cost of the project was $900,000.
