Pennsylvania History

Before Europeans arrived, Pennsylvania was home to various Native American Indian tibes including: the Delaware, Iroquois, Eriez, Shawnee and other tribes. Evidence shows us that English explorers visited the area as early as 1497.

The area came under the control of England in 1664. In 1682, a Quaker colony based on religious tolerance was founded.

In 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed in Pennsylvania. Became the second state to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1787. In 1887, Pennsylvania was admitted as one of the original Thirteen Colonies.

The capital is Harrisburg and Philadelphia is the largest city. The population is more then 12 million.
