The name Oklahoma, comes from the Choctaw words, okla meaning people and homma meaning red.
Evidence seems to show us that the Vikings were the first Europeans to visit Oklahoma.
In 1541, the area was visited by Spanish explorer Coronado.
The area came under Spanish control until 1800.
From there, the French took control till 1803, when it became part of the U.S. with the Louisiana Purchase.
The region was opened to settlement in 1889.
On November 16th, 1907, Oklahoma became the 46th state in the Union.
Oklahoma was originally designated Indian Territory, prior to it becoming a state in 1907.
Indian tribes included the Ottawa, Potawatomi, Sauk, Choctaw, Creek, Chickasaw, and Cherokee among others.
The capital of the state is Oklahoma City.
