New York History

The area of New York was in originally inhabited by the Lenape Indian Tribe. In 1524, the first European explorer entered New York Harbor. In 1607, Henry Hudson claimed the area in the name of the Netherlands. The area was called, New Netherlands.

In 1663, the Duke of York purchased the grant of Long Island and other islands on the New England coast. In 1664, the Duke equipped an armed expedition, which took possession of New Amsterdam. This was named New York, after the Duke.

New York was established by its colonial charter which wasd adopted on April 20, 1777.

New York was one of the original thirteen colonies that became the United States and was the 11th state to ratify the United States Constitution. These days New York is the third most populous state of the United States with close tp 20 million people.
