Michigan History

Michigan was originally home to various Native American tribes including the Algonquian, Anishnabe, Ottawa and the Potawatomi. In 1622, the first European explorers arrived in the area.

In 1641, the first European settlement was founded. In 1671 Saint-Ignace was founded and Marquette in 1675.

Under the 1763 Treaty of Paris, Michigan passed to Great Britain. On January 26, 1837, Michigan formally entered the Union.

In 1910, Michigan held its first primary election. Lansing has been the state capital since 1847, and Detroit the largest city.
