New Mexico History

The original inhabitants of New Mexico were Native Americans of the Anasazi culture. New Mexico acquired its early European visitors. The area became part of the Spanish viceroyalty of New Spain.

After the 1810-1821 Mexican War of Independence, the province of New Mexico passed to independent Mexico. The American government established the Territory of New Mexico on September 9, 1850. The territory, included most of the future states of Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Colorado. It officially established its capital at Santa Fe in 1851.

On January 6, 1912, congress admitted New Mexico as the 47th state in the Union.

The State Nickname is Land of Enchantment and the State Song is, "O, Fair New Mexico".
