German immigrants settled along the Mississippi River in the 1720s.
Eventually, the area became split between Britain and Spain.
In 1800, France's Napoleon Bonaparte acquired Louisiana from Spain.
In 1803, Bonaparte sold Louisiana to the United States.
During the American Civil War, Louisiana seceded from the Union.
The capital city is Baton Rouge.
