New Jersey History

New Jersey state was named after the island of Jersey in the English Channel. The area was originally inhabited by Native American Indians known as the Lenni-Lenape.

The first Europeans to settle in the area were the Swedes and Dutch during the early 1600s. In 1664, the region became a territory of England.

During the American Revolution, New Jersey was one of the thirteen colonies that revolted against British rule. New Jersey was the third state to ratify the United States Constitution. On November 20, 1789, New Jersey ratified the Bill of Rights.

The Capital is Trenton and the Largest city is Newark.
