At the time of the first European arrival, the area of Georgia was occupied by the Cherokee and the Creek Native American Indians.
Although unsure, it is possible the Spanish were the first Europeans to explore the area.
A number of early French colonies were built but failed.
Later, the British, French and Spanish established themsleves there in one form or another.
On February 12, 1733, 113 settlers in the HMS Anne landed at what became the city of Savannah.
This day is now known as Georgia Day.
Georgia became one of the thirteen colonies that revolted against British rule in the American Revolution when it signed the 1776 Declaration of Independence.
On January 18, 1861, Georgia joined the Confederacy.
After the end of the war, it was the last former Confederate state to be readmitted to the Union.
