Florida History

In 1845, Florida was admitted as the 27th state. Although it seceded from the Union in 1861, it was readmitted in 1868.

Numeruos indigenous people inhabited the area originally including the Ais, Apalachee, Calusa, and Tocobago tribes. The first European to explore the area was Juan Ponce de León in 1513.

Spanish Pensacola was established in 1559. French Huguenots founded Fort Caroline in 1564. In 1763, Great Britain gained control of Florida.

Although Spain temporarily regained Florida, in 1819, by terms of the Adams-Onís Treaty, Spain ceded Florida to the United States. Tallahassee is the capital.
