Los Angeles History

The area of Los Angeles as we know it today, was inhabited by Native American Indians originally. The Spanish were the first Europens to explore the area when when Juan Cabrillo visited in 1542.

The city was founded by the Spanish in 1781, by Spanish Captain Rivera Moncada. In 1821, when Mexico gained independence from Spain, the area remained as part of Mexico.

As a result of the Mexican-American War, the area of Los Angeles came under the control of the United States. During the 1920s, as a result of the motion picture and aviation industries, Los Angeles gained international fame.

Los Angeles is the largest city in the state of California and the second-largest in the United States.
