The origins of the Saint Bernard Dog can be traced to the The Great Saint Bernard Pass and the monastery which bears the same name.
The Pass provided a route between Switzerland and Italy.
The Roman armies crossed into Switzerland in the 2nd century bringing with them a Mastiff type dog 3which later became the St Bernard.
Daniel Wilson first referred to the "Saint Bernard Dog" in 1833.
Later in 1880 the name was officially recognized for the breed by the Swiss Kennel Club.
The St Bernard dog is an excellent pathfinder and able to easily locate travellers lost and buried in the storms.
Saint Bernards have been responsible for saving in excess of 2,000 human lives.
The St Bernard is a real family dog and loves to be with children.
The St Bernards are eager to please and train easily.
