Weightlifting History

Early forms of Weightlifting can be found in the history of the ancient Roman and Greek civilizations. Early Weightlifting was done mostly with heavy stones or even statues.

On 28th March 1891, the first World Championships were held in London. Weightlifting was part of the first Modern Olympic Games, in Athens, in 1896.

In 1905, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) was founded. In 1950, Weightlifting first entered the Commonwealth Games program in Auckland.

The worlds best weightlifters have mostly come from the former Soviet Union, Russia, Bulgaria, Turkey and Romania. Vasily Alexeyev of the USSR was the greatest weightlifter of all time setting 80 world records and winning two gold medals at the Olympics.
