Fencing emerged as a pastime for gentlemen and was often a way of settling disputes.
Modern Fencing was introduced in the 1840`s to the United States by German Turners.
In 1891, the Amateur Fencers League of America (now the U. S. Fencing Association) was founded.
In 1902, the Great Britain Amateur Fencing Association was founded.
Fencing was part of the original modern Olympics in 1896.
