Abebe Bikila

Abebe Bikila was born AugUST 7, 1932 in Ethiopia.

He was regarded by many as the greatest runner, and the greatest sports hero ever in history.

Abebe Bikila won the Marathon gold medal in the 1960 Olympics, the Marathon gold medal in the 1964 Olympics, and was the Olympic Marathon world record holder.

Bikila was the first African to win an Olympics medal. But it was the fact that Bikila won the Marathon in just bare feet that gained him international acclaim. Then when Abebe won the next Olympic Marathon in Japan, he had only six weeks earlier underwent surgery for an Appendicitis.

In 1970, Abebe Bikila won the Gold Medal in a 25 Km cross-country sledge competition in Norway.

Abebe Bikila died 25 October, 1973.
