Aussie Rules History

The history of Aussie Rules can be traced to 1858 when Tom Wills began to devise Australian rules in Melbourne. Tom sent a letter that was published in Bell's Life in Victoria & Sporting Chronicle on 10 July 1858. The letter suggested for a "foot-ball club" with a "code of laws" to keep cricketers fit during winter. The first game of Aussie Rules was played on 31 July, 1858, at Richmond Paddock, Melbourne.

On 7 August 1858, the Melbourne Football Club was founded. The oldest set of rules were written in 1859.

The game's first league, the Victorian Football Association (VFA) was formed in 1877. The game was often called "Melbourne Rules" in the beginning. But it soon spread to other States across Australia. In 1879, the first intercolonial match was played. 1977 saw the introduction of State of Origin rules.
