Arm Wrestling History

Arm Wrestling is a sport that is mostly contested and dominated by the United States. Arm Wrestling can be traced all the way back to acient Egypt where a painting depicting a type of arm wrestling was found in an Egyptian tomb dating to about 2,000 B.C.

The modern sport of Arm Wrestling in the United States is based on the Native American game. In the early days the sport was often called, "Indian wrestling". In 1952, the first matches took place in Petaluma, California, in a saloon. Bob O'Leary founded the American Armwrestling Association, now the American Armsports Association (AAA), in the 1960s.

In 1968, Charles Schultz did a number of comic strips on Arm Wrestling that helped give the sport coverage. The World Armsport Federation (WAF), was founded with the United States, Canada, Brazil, and India as the first members. In 1992, the World Armsport Federation (WAF), held its first world championships in Switzerland.
