Swedenborgianism

Swedenborgianism originates from the writings of Emanuel Swedenborg. Swedenborg was born Emanuel Swedberg on January 29, 1688. During his life, Swedenborg wrote and published 18 theological works, and wrote several unpublished theological works.

Although Swedenborg talked of a "new church" founded on his theology, he himself never actually established such a church.

In 1787, the Church of the New Jerusalem, was founded in England and took up the beliefs of Swedenborgianism.

By 1817, the General Convention of the New Church was founded in the United States, now also known as the Swedenborgian Church of North America. However, by the late 19th century, there were a number of splits in the church.
