REFLEXOLOGY

Relexologists believe the feet and hands are a mirror of the body. Reflexologists believe that by placing pressure on specific reflex points of the feet it will affect the corresponding points of the body.

All parts of the foot are massaged so that the whole body may benefit. Foot massage is believed to have originated in China over 5,000 years ago.

It was also practiced in ancient Egypt. In 1915 Dr W H Fitzgerald produced the concept of zone therapy.

The therapy claimed to alleviate certain symptoms by applying pressure to certain parts of the body. Physiotherapist E Ingham took this treatment one step further and developed the reflex method of compression massage.

Later, one of her students developed what is now known as reflexology. It was introduced into the U.K. in the 1960s.

The theory is that reflex points on the left foot correspond to zones on the left side of the body. The same applies to the right side.

Reflexologists believe granular accumulations of waste matter concentrate around reflex points. This waste matter is in the form of uric acid and calcium crystals.

In order to free the energy flow along the zones the reflexologist try's to break the waste. This will open blocked nerve pathways and help to flush away toxins.

States of mind are said to be represented by certain points of the feet. Reflexologists claim more than 100 ailments may benefit from this treatment.

When consulting a practitioner of reflexology you will be asked to lie on a table and remove your shoes. The practitioner will stimulate the reflex points of your feet checking for pain or tenderness.

The greater the tenderness the greater the imbalance. Several techniques are used.

Thumb walking allows gentle movement from one reflex point to another. A treatment usually lasts around 45 to 60 minutes.

Several sessions may be required depending on your problem. Many people see a reflexologist on a regular basis for healthy well being.
