A Bowdoin graduate, he went on to practise law.
Married Jane Means Appleton in 1834.
Speaker of the New Hampshire House of Representatives.
Served in the Senate from 1837 to 1842.
Was President from 1853 to 1857.
Died: Concord, Oct. 8, 1869.
