Flew 58 combat missions during World War II.

Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery in action.

Married Barbara Pierce in 1945.

Served two terms as a Representative to Congress from Texas.

Served as Ambassador to the United Nations, Chairman of the Republican National Committee, Chief of the U. S. Liaison Office in the People's Republic of China, and Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.
