ORTHOMOLECULAR THERAPY

Orthomolecular Therapy involves the prescription of large doses of vitamins and minerals. It was pioneered by Dr. Linus Pauling.

Practitioners believe that each individual is biochemically unique, therefore nutritional deficiencies affect cetain people more than others. The practitioner uses a wide variety of supplements to treat each individual at a biochemical level.

Orthomolecular Therapy uses vitamins as medication not as a food supplement. Practitioners stress the need for antioxidents such as vitamin C, which are said to mop up free radical molecules which cause cell damage.

Practitioners prescribe doses of vitamins and minerals that are hundreds of times higher than the RDA for different ailments. Practitioners take a medical history, physical examination and arrange for blood, urine and tissue tests.

The supplements prescribed are tailored to individual requirments. For example up to 20,000 mg of vitamin C a day.

Nutrients may also be given by injection. If there are side effects the practitioner reduces the dose until symptoms subside.
