Ava Gardner Biography

Ava Gardner was born December 24, 1922, in Smithfield, North Carolina. Gardner grew up in a poor family, but at age 18 she left home for Hollywood. After taking a screen test, Ava gained a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

The first major role for Gardner was "The Killers" in 1946, opposite Burt Lancaster.

Ava recieved a nomination for an Academy Award in 1953 for her performance in "Mogambo". Gardner starred in a series of hit movies including: One Touch of Venus (1948), Show Boat (1951), The Barefoot Contessa (1954), Bhowani Junction (1956), and The Night of the Iguana (1964).

Ava married three times in her life:
Mickey Rooney 1941-1943,
Artie Shaw 1945-1946,
Frank Sinatra 1948-1957.

Later in life, Gardner became a recluse in London. She suffered a stroke in 1989 which left her partially paralyzed. Frank Sinatra paid all her medical expenses from this point on. Ava Gardner died on January 25, 1990, in London, England.
