Timothy Eaton was born in 1834 and went on to become one of the most important businessmen in Canada.
He founded the Eaton's department store which became one of the most succesful retail businesses in Canada.
In 1919, employees at the Eaton department store wanted to present the Eaton family with a special gift as a way of saying thankyou for the very kind way they were treated.
They commissioned Ivor Lewis from Eaton's advertising department, to create two statues.
On December 8, 1919, the Toronto statue was unveiled.
The Winnipeg statue was unveiled on December 11, 1919.
When the Eaton's chain declared bankruptcy in 1999, the Toronto statue was eventually moved to the Royal Ontario Museum.
