Divorce existed since ancient Mesopotamia and the ancient Athenians. In Canada, divorce was not recognized in until the 1960s. In Scotland, divorce was allowed from 1560 for adultery. Statutory changes in 1573 recognized desertion as additional grounds. There were further changes with the Divorce Act of 1938 and 1976.

Most divorces occur within the first ten years of marriage. Some of the causes for divoce include: Extra-marital affairs, Family strains, Emotional/physical abuse, Mid-life crisis, Addictions and Workaholism.

Most cases of divorce are instigated by women. Numerous studies have shown that the clear gender bias in the courts towards the favour of the women may be behind this in many cases.
