Izanami is the mother of gods in Japanese Shinto mythology and
the ancestress of the Japanese people. A personification of the
Earth and of darkness, she is the wife and sister of Izanagi and
the mother of the elements of the universe.
She died giving birth
to the fire god Kagutsuchi and went to the underworld.
Transformed there into a demon-queen, she was so horrifying to
look at that when her husband traveled to the underworld to
retrieve her, he fled in fear and disgust.
It was too late to
bring her home anyway: she had eaten food in the land of the
dead.
Izanami was angry at her husband's reaction to her
appearance, so they divorced on the spot and she pursued him with
an army of demons to throw him out of her world.
