UNITED STATES WOMENS ISSUES

In the United States each year an estimated 50,000 women and children are said to be smuggled in from poor countries for use in prostitution. Many of those involved have been kidnapped or tricked into believing they will be working at legitimate jobs.

Once inside the country, they are forced into sexual slavery. Trafficking has been heaviest in New York and Los Angeles.

Some of the U.S. problem is homegrown. Gangs are accused of kidnapping minors, gang raping them and forcing them into prostitution.

Often such gang activities are tolerated by police.
