NEW ZEALAND GANGS

Women involved with New Zealand's gangs say being beaten up and raped is just part of their everyday lives.

Women interviewed by Christchurch based anti-violence campaigner Glennis Dennehy said gang members have burned them with hot fat, attacked them with machetes and injected them with drugs and gang raped them.

They said they can't report the violence to police and escape to women's refuges because they think they would be found. One said the members would threaten to "track you down and kill you".

Christchurch police officer Detective Richard Neale told The New Zealand Herald that the gangs "are crack researchers and are able to find information on almost anyone".

It must be pointed out that the New Zealand government has enacted tough legislation against the gangs over the years. The government offers strong support to women who are victims of violence.
